Review:
This was a fantastic read.

I had pretty high hopes going into this and I was not disappointed. This is a heartbreaking and heartwarming story mostly focusing on a young woman and her grandmother, and getting to know both of them and their stories was emotional and wonderful. It explores the history of Vietnam as well as its culture, and the book is filled with tragedy, war and sorrow alongside love, hope and kindness.

It is a pretty grim book in parts, but you can't expect it not to be, when most of the book is set during conflict and war. I really like how the author explores this topic though; the story doesn't shy away from the cruelty and barbarity of war, but it also explores the good side of humanity and forgiveness.

It's a multifaceted book filled with meaning and beautifully written as well. The setting is evoked amazingly, the characters feel like real people and it's a beautiful story about family, perseverance and this wonderful and fascinating relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter.
