Review:
This is my first book by Hurston - I've got the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God but haven't read it yet - and it was really, really good. I can't wait to delve into her novels after having read this.

This is definitely an interesting memoir and although it starts off with her childhood and her growing up in somewhat chronological order, towards the end the chapters evolve into discussing different themes, as if it almost turns into an essay collection. I think this book allows us into this time period and her life and I especially liked reading about her years growing up, and I really liked getting to know her a little bit.

The writing style of this is what really does it for me though; I read somewhere that you can tell in this book that Hurston is a master storyteller and I completely agree. Everything in here is written as a story and it's very easy to become engaged in it. Every once in a while, I would notice that things would maybe get a bit too abstract and I got a bit lost, but the majority of this is just excellent.

I also think the introduction of this, written by Maya Angelou, was really good because it sort prepares you for what this book is and mentions certain things that the memoir doesn't touch on and I thought that was really interesting and added something to it. Overall, very glad I read this and I'm so interested to jump into this authors fictional works.
