Title: Dancing in Odessa
Author: Ilya Kaminsky
Published: 2004
Language: English
Pages: 58
Rating: 2/5
Summary:
A collection of poetry written by a Russian immigrant, depicting parts of his life and experiences.
Review:
So. I had pretty high expectations about this collection, but I find myself with mixed feelings.
As you may know if you've read my other reviews of poetry, you will know that what I look for in a collection is a personal connection. And like with many other highly acclaimed poetry collections, I find that lacking in this.
The language and writing is beautiful, there's no doubt. It has a distinct tenderness and sadness I think most poetry lovers can appreciate. The form is loose and mixed. I do not think this is a collection for people who are new to poetry, this is for the poetry enthusiast who has already read quite a lot.
I don't quite know what to say, except that it was not my cup of tea, and though I've read so many places that it's unforgettable, I very much doubt that.
