BOOK HAUL:
SEPTEMBER

September is one of my favorite months and this year it has been so lovely. Last year we went straight from summer to winter with very little in between, but this year autumn has come in all its beauty, which makes me very happy.

I just love autumn! The leaves are turning, the air is chilly and fresh and I can drink as much hot chocolate as I want (I can technically do this all year, but it tastes better this time of year). It's just so cosy! I also find myself being a bit more creative and inspired which is fantastic.

Anyways, to the books! These are the ones I picked up this month!

BOOK REVIEW:
THE OASIS BY MARY MCCARTHY

Title: The Oasis
Author: Mary McCarthy
Published: 1949
Language: English
Pages: 133
Rating: 1/5

Summary:
At the beginning of the Cold War, a group of intellectuals try to establish a rural utopian colony.

Review:
Honestly, I don't really have that much to say about this.

I was initially excited about this, because I knew it caused quite an uproar when it first came out, but I found the whole novel to be dull and completely uninteresting. I didn't find any of the characters interesting and didn't really connect to any of them. I get the satire and the critique of society, but I found I just didn't care.

I didn't really like the writing either, so I'm not really left with much after having read this, I'm afraid. Definitely not my cup of tea.

THINGS I LIKE NO. 15

Now that autumn is upon us, there's nothing I enjoy more than having a Sunday off work and having a really relaxing spa day, and one of my favorite masks is the Brazened Honey one from LUSH. It's freshly made, so I can't always get my hands on this, but when I do, I enjoy it so, so much.

It's a detoxifying and clarifying mask, but it also brings moisture to the skin. It feels really nice and it just makes my skin look a little fresher.
All LUSH products are of course cruelty free, which is fantastic. I really wish there was a LUSH shop closer to me so I could buy these more often, it's such a treat!

BOOK REVIEW:
THE TERRIBLE BY YRSA DALEY-WARD

Title: The Terrible
Author: Yrsa Daley-Ward
Published: 2018
Language: English
Pages: 224
Rating: 4/5

Summary:
In this lyrical memoir, Daley-Ward tells us of her experience of growing up, discovering the world and herself.

Review:
This was such a wonderful read.

The whole book is written in poetry form and I wondered how that would work and if it would work; and it does. The writing is beautiful and lyrical but it still tells a whole and complete story. It's raw and honest and makes you feel a whole range of emotions.

The story brings up a lot of important issues like immigration, womanhood, sexuality, race, drugs and depression and the way the author deals with these topics feel so real and genuine (probably because they are).

I'm unsure as to how this would read to someone who doesn't enjoy this form of writing, but it's an absolute must read for anyone who enjoys memoirs and poetry.

BOOK REVIEW:
SECRETS WE KEPT BY KRYSTAL A. SITAL

Title: Secrets We Kept: Three Women of Trinidad
Author: Krystal A. Sital
Published: 2018
Language: English
Pages: 352
Rating: 3/5

Summary:
This is the story of Krystal, her mother and her grandmother and the secret experiences they all had with Krystal's grandfather which comes to light after he's taken ill at an old age.

Review:
This was a really fascinating read. I really like how this takes a look at three different generations of women and how we get to see this society from all of their perspectives. The book gives us a look into the culture of Trinidad and the island itself is brought to live with Sital's words; she conjures up smells, taste, people, what it looks like and most important: what it feels like.

The book details the abuse and hardship these women endured and the patriarchal society that made it possible. It's impossible not to be furious with the situation when you're reading this, but it also brings up a lot of interesting discussions around the topic.

I think the writing is very good and the way the author has weaved these stories together is excellent, but because the dialogue is written almost entirely in dialect, I found myself constantly having to read things over and out loud to make sense of it. I may have struggled with this because English isn't my first language and I think it definitely adds something to the book, but I found it a bit frustrating and it took me ages to made my way through it.

Either way, I think this is such an interesting read and it was great to get to take a look at this culture and get to know these people. It's very much worth the read if you like memoirs.

BOOK REVIEW:
THE SMELL OF OTHER PEOPLE'S HOUSES BY BONNIE-SUE HITCHCOCK

Title: The Smell of Other People's Houses
Author: Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock
Published: 2016
Language: English
Pages: 240
Rating: 2/5

Summary:
Set in Alaska in the 70's, in this we meet four young people, all with their own difficulties, whose lives are about to become entangled.

Review:
I quite liked this book. I've had it on my shelves for a while and I'm glad I finally got around to reading it.

I absolutely love the setting of Alaska in this book. You get such a good sense of the place and the time and you can really feel how the seasons shift throughout the story. I enjoyed reading about the characters, although I preferred reading about some over others, and I really like how the novel slowly reveals how they're connected and brings them all together in the end.

I had a bit of a rocky time in the beginning of this though. I had a hard time telling some characters apart and I felt like I kept falling out of the story every time I put it down. By the time I felt like everything was in place and I was enjoying myself, the book was over, so that was a bit of a shame. I kind of wish it was longer.

I really like the concept of this book and the issues it brings up, but I'm left with a feeling of it all being spread a bit too thin. It's one of those books I can remember having enjoyed now, but in a year, I will probably have forgotten everything in it except the parts about Alaska.
