Review:
I was very excited to read this book, as I thought the premise of it sounded amazing, but sadly, I did not enjoy this all that much.

The concept of this book is good, but the execution of it is faulty. The setting is pretty interesting and I liked the mystery and following it to see whodunnit, but the characters in this are sadly lacking in depth. They all feel vapid, one-dimensional and that they're simply put on the page to fill their role in solving the murder and nothing more. I was not interested in any of them.

I was especially disappointed with how the women were portrayed in this; I was looking forward to seeing women in this time period doing this exciting work, but both of the female characters in the murder mystery team came across as bland, even though they're both introduced as interesting people. There's no spark in them, and they're often referred to as being "suitably chastened" by some male character which made me roll my eyes (and it's not written in a way where it's obvious that it's anything else than as if they're looked down upon). They feel like accessories to the men and nothing more.

Overall, this was just very average and the further into the book I got, the less I cared. I probably won't be continuing on with this series.
