Review:
This was a very good collection of poetry.

I really enjoyed the themes explored in this book; race, home, history and womanhood. It gives a wonderful look into what it was like growing up as a woman of color in Alabama, and how the echoes of history affected it.

One of my favorite poems from this collection is "Prayer", which starts off like this (this is only an exceprt):

Our Father who art in Heaven,
let me tell you how it is:
the cool girls at school
make fun of my lunch every day,
and you, Father, are uniquely qualified
to end my woes.

Father,
please tell mama to buy the daintier deli meats -
black forest ham, honey roasted turkey -
instead of fat, cold bologna.

Guide her unchanging hand toward honey mustard
and those pretty little pickles cut into discs.
Let her find peace in whole wheat bread.
p. 14

It's a beautiful collection, and if you like poetry and Southern literature and culture, this is a must read.
