This is the first book in the Amulet series.

After a family tragedy, Emily, Navin and their mother move to a mysterious, old house, once belonging to their great grandfather. But when they venture down into the basement, Emily's mother is kidnapped by a strange being, and to save her, they must venture into a strange and new world.

Phew! I had extremely high expectations for this graphic novel, and I was so happy to find it lived up to it and more.

This book is fast-paced, fascinating and gripping. The world is mysterious and dark, and I can't wait to find out more about it. I love the artwork, especially the mix between full spread illustrations and normal graphic novel pages. The colouring is amazing and it's all very atmospheric.

I thought this was a very good start to a series and right up my alley, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys middle grade and graphic novels.
