The Nobel Prize in Literature is probably one of the most prestigious prizes an author can win, and is awarded each year to a person who has produced "in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction".
And so, I've made a little list of some of the winners and books they've written that I want to read.

The Sound and The Fury by William Faulkner
Awarded in 1949
A must-read that I keep seeing everywhere, this is set in Jefferson, Mississippi and centres around the Compson family, former Southern aristocrats struggling with the dissolution of their family.
I always want to read this because I want to read more American classics, as I have a tendency to lean more towards British ones.
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Awarded in 1962
A favourite of so many people, I need to get around to this one. As far as I know, this is about two drifters who are chasing the American dream.
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel G. Marquez
Awarded in 1982
A book I recently bought in the effort to read more translated works. I do not know what this is even about, I just read somewhere that this author was a pioneer in magical realism, which intrigues me.
Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison
Awarded in 1993
A book that has been recommended to me, this is the coming of age story about an African-American man.
My name is Red by Orhan Pamuk
Awarded in 2006
This is a book I looked at in an airport bookstore and wrote down the name of because it looked really interesting (it also sparked the idea for this post). This is a mystery story set in the Ottoman Empire in Turkey, where an artist has been killed.
I've heard amazing things about the way this is written, so I am really intrigued.
If you've read any of these, let me know what you thought!
